South African Tokyo Sexwale to run for FIFA presidency

Tokyo Sexwale, South African politician and business tycoon has announced his candidacy to run for the Fifa presidency.

The former anti-Apartheid prisoner received the nod from South African Football Association, which confirmed on Saturday that it was throwing its weight behind the 62-year-old’s candidacy.

Sexwale is among a number of candidates who intend to replace suspended Fifa president Sepp Blatter. Blatter and vice-president Michel Platini were provisionally suspended for 90 days over allegations of corruption.

Sexwale has no football administration experience but has been actively participating in football matters and he currently serves as a Fifa anti-racism adviser. The multimillionaire has vast leadership, political and business experience, and many believe the scandal-laden world football governing could benefit from Sexwale’s wealth of experience.

The former premier of Gauteng province and cabinet minister, “was part of South Africa’s 2010 FIFA World Cup bidding team and the committee that organised the event,” Mail and Guardian reported.

Fifa will elect a new president on 26 February next year.

Other candidates vying for the presidency include, former Fifa official Jerome Champagne, Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, former Trinidad and Tobago player David Nakhid and Platini, president of European football’s governing body Uefa.
